There are many museums in Umbria and one is more beautiful than the other. Check out this list of five great museums that we visited ourselves. These should not be missed when you are on holiday in Umbria.

Teatro della Concordia in Monte Castello di Vibio

Monte Castello di Vibio is a small and cozy village in Umbria. In the center there are quaint alleyways, a bar, a butcher, a bakery and a small wooden theater “Teatro della Concordia”. The theater has only 99 seats divided in the boxes and on the ground floor. It is the smallest theater in the world! The atmosphere is unique and intimate. There are still performances and you can visit the theater. You won’t be in long, but you’ll be amazed by the history of this place.

Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria

The largest and most important museum of Umbria is in Perugia. In the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria you will find a rich collection of Umbrian paintings, many from the 13th and 14th centuries. The museum is in the Palazzo dei Priori on the third floor. The entrance is underneath the two symbols of Perugia: the lion and the griffin. It is a beautiful museum with special exhibitions on a regular basis. This museum is definitely worth a visit if your passion is art history.

Complesso Museale di San Francesco

Montefalco means mountain of the falcon. It is the balcony of Umbria and the wine region of the Sagrantino. In this beautiful village is the museum of Saint Francis: Complesso Museale di San Francesco. Beautiful frescoes from Umbrian and Tuscan masters can be admired. The museum is in the old church of Saint Francis close to the Piazza del Comune in the center of Montefalco. There is a pinacotheek and there is a section dedicated to works of art and works of monks who used to make wine here.

Museo delle Mummie in Ferentillo

The Valnerina is a special part of Umbria, in the mountains with lots of greenery and space. Ferentillo is a small mountain village in the Valnerina and has a mummy museum. It is a small museum where mummies have remained almost intact. On some you still see their nails and others even wear their clothes. You are not allowed to take pictures in the museum. Before you enter the museum, you will receive a small guide with all information about the mummies. Mind this museum is not suitable for small children. After a visit to the museum, driving through this beautiful green area is highly recommended.

Casa del Cioccolato Perugina

A tour of the chocolate factory in Perugia is a fun activity if you are in Umbria. You have to make a reservation because you can’t walk in on your own. In the factory, you will first see a short video about the history of the famous chocolate Perugina. After this you’ll visit the museum and will taste different types of chocolate. In addition, you’ll see the factory where the Baci chocolates are made and packaged. The tour is in both Italian and English. A nice experience for real chocolate lovers and a good idea for a rainy day.
